Thermotropic Liquid Crystalline Polymer Fibers
Super-strength, lightweight materials used in bullet-proof vests, high-performance cables and tires, and stealth airplanes are built from liquid crystalline polymer (LCP) bers. The remarkable strength properties are dominated by molecular alignment achieved as a result of the complex interactions at play in ber processes. The ber manufacturing process begins with a high temperature liquid phase...
متن کاملCharacterization of thermotropic liquid crystalline polymers
The characterization of thermotropic, main chain liquid crystalline polymers for the type, thermal and thermodynamic properties, order, and degree of liquid crystallinity of the anisotropic phase is described through the use of the following methods: (1) polarized light microscopy, (2) wide angle X—ray diffraction, (3) differential scanning calorimetry, (4) small angle light scattering, (5) ele...
متن کاملPhospholipids with a stimuli-responsive thermotropic liquid-crystalline moiety.
Lyotropic liquid-crystalline phospholipids having an electro- and/or light-responsive mesogenic core were prepared. These LCs show lyotropic smectic A, smectic C, rectangular columnar, and nematic phases. We succeeded in the dynamic control of these LC phases by applying an electric field, which could lead to electrically switchable phospholipid bilayers.
متن کاملEffect of Annealing on Morphology of Thermotropic Liquid Crystalline Polyesters
Liquid crystal polymers with semiflexible polymer backbone exhibit crystalline order despite of some defects in crystal packing. Isothermal heat treatment of the polymers below and above their liquid crystalline temperatures is expected to provide the necessary energy and time for the molecular chains to overcome the defects in crystal packing and to be arranged in a more perfect crystal lattic...
متن کاملThermotropic Liquid Crystalline Behavior of an Amphiphilic Polymer Lacking Mesogens
The thermotropic liquid crystalline behavior of a new kind of amphiphilic polymer without mesogens is reported. The existence and structure for the polymeric mesophase are confirmed and characterized by DSC, X-ray diffraction, optical polarized microscopy, and temperature-dependent FTIR. Due to strong interactions between pendent long alkyl chains, we conclude that some hydrophobic semirigid ro...
